.The 2009 Pan jiu jitsu championships was larger than ever and finished with Lucas Leite capturing gold by defeating Kron Gracie in the middle weight final by a score of 7-4. The black belt division saw Nivaldo De Olivera take 3rd place in the medium heavy division with a controversial loss to Octavio Sousa. The ultra heavy weight division had 2 placers with Rodrigo Cavaca securing 2nd place and Ricardo "Pantcho" Feliciano taking 3rd place enduring and ACL tear. Ary Farias was victorious in the light feather division in his first year as a brown belt. Joao Assis took 2nd place in a controversial disqualification; however, Joao secured a first place victory in the open class of the brown belt division. Mr. Bruiser Neal landed a gold medal in his weight division and in the open class of the senior 2 brown belt division. Adam Provence secured a 3rd place finish in the purple belt category. A congratulations goes to Joao Assis and Bruiser Neal in receiving their black belts.

Grappler's Quest made it's first visit to California on March 21st and 22nd in Del Mar. The first day of competition was no-gi, which featured a 16-man open weight pro division worth $2,500. The semi-finals included Lucas Leite, Rodrigo Cavaca and Marcel Louzado with Lucas Leite winning the grand prize by defeating Bill "the grill" Cooper in the finals. Rodrigo "Mike" was among the participants in the pro tournament. Rodrigo Cavaca cinched a 1st place victory in the advanced Super Heavyweight division and shared a 1st place win with Joao Assis in the advance open weight category. Joao also took 1st place in the advanced Cruiserweight division. Meanwhile, Lucas Leite Marcello Mafra shared a 1st place victory in the advanced middle weight division and Marcel Louzado ran through the advanced Light Heavyweight category en route to his 1st place win. The main event for Day number 2 included a $3,000 16-man pro black belt championship. In a first round victory over a much heavier Rafael Lovato, Jr., Nivaldo De Olivera took 4th place overall. Rodrigo Cavaca took 3rd place in the 16-man tournament. Rodrigo "Mike" clinched a 1st place victory in the Light weight black belt division with a win over Phillipe del Monica. The brown belt division featured Joao Assis with his wins in the open class and his weight division. Purple belt James Guyton secured a 3rd place victory in his weight category. Mario Barbosa clinched 1st place victories in the no-gi open class and in his weight division. Checkmat wants to thank everyone who competed .

Some great news from CHECKMAT BJJ MALAYSIA out in Malaysia with the promotion of 4 blue belts by Marcos Escobar & Chico Mendes. Congratulations to Aaron Goh, Eugene 'Kenu' Lee, Lee 'Sakuraba' Fang & Raul Tapia. All four were promoted just 2 days before the seminar that was held last weekend.

UPCOMING SEMINARS:
Marcos Escobar & Chico Mendes are now
preparing to head up to Singapore where Chico will have a seminar at Kreation BJJ on the 29th. Following the seminar in Singapore, the duo will head to Borneo BJJ in Kota Kinabalu on the 4-5 of April.

First, I would like to congratulate every single athlete for the excelent result we obtained at the Europeans this year!

As you all know, we took first place over all and this left me very happy and proud!

As I mentioned in a previous e-mail, we are a team and are therefore dependant of eachothers efforts and resolution. This championship proved just that! 

Team; we just took it to another level! This was our eighth big title!

Continuing our given course towards our common objectives, this year we will showcase a list of all our academies in Gracie Magazine and Tatame Magazine, among others.

I know that many of you already have submitted information about your academy, but there is a lot of info missing.
